They came together after an election that they viewed as a threat to their way of life. They refused to accept the democratic result of that election. They came together to preserve their superiority and way of life. They fought to protect their economic and social system way of life. They started a rebellion against the US Government out of fear of losing political power and perceived cultural shifts, resorting to violence to preserve their vision of America. After all the horror and bloodshed was done, the President gave them all amnesty from their crimes.
Does this all sound familiar to you? Did you think I was referencing the folks who rose up at President Trump’s beckoning on January 6, 2020? I wasn’t, all those facts stated above are about the Confederate states who decided to rebel against their own country to maintain their rights to enslave other people.
Let’s put them next to each other and see if we see any similarities.
- Challenging Election Outcomes & Democracy:
- Confederacy:Â Seceded after Abraham Lincoln’s election, viewing it as a threat to slavery and their way of life, refusing to accept the democratic result.
- Jan 6:Â Attackers sought to overturn the 2020 election, believing false claims of fraud, aiming to prevent the peaceful transfer of power.
- Â White Supremacy & Racial Hierarchy:
- Confederacy:Â Explicitly founded to preserve slavery and white racial superiority, as detailed in its own constitution.
- Jan 6:Â Demonstrated by the presence of the Confederate flag and the targeting of Black officers, symbolizing enduring racism and a desire to maintain racial power, noted by historians.
- Fear of Losing Power/Way of Life:
- Confederacy:Â Fought to protect a social and economic system built on enslavement.
- Jan 6:Â Insurrectionists acted out of fear of losing political power and perceived cultural shifts, resorting to violence to preserve their vision of America.
- Opposition to Federal Authority:
- Confederacy:Â Direct rebellion against the U.S. government by forming a separate nation.
- Jan 6:Â An attempt to physically disrupt the certification of a federal election, with symbols like the Confederate flag representing defiance against federal power and democratic processes.Â
President Andrew Johnson granted amnesty to many Southerners after the Civil War, issuing proclamations that allowed most ex-Confederates to regain citizenship by taking an oath of allegiance, though Confederate leaders and wealthy planters were initially excluded and had to apply for special pardons, culminating in a final, sweeping pardon for all in December 1868.
President Trump’s first action in office was to grant amnesty to all the January 6th seditionist. Many of whom are back in jail as I write this.
I will never forget what these traitors including Ashley Babbitt did on January 6, 2020. Carrying Confederate and Trump flags, desecrating the Senate and House and attacking police officers. I watched it my own eyes and I will never forgive or forget what these seditionist did to our republic!
