It’s that time of the year again, you know, when all the right leaning conservative news outlets start yelling about “The War on Christmas”. Fox News talking heads will all be out there screaming about people saying Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas and such. For years, Fox News Channel and other conservative media outlets insisted there was a “war on Christmas, there is no such thing. But Fox likes to use this imaginary war to gin up viewership and stir up the Christian Nationalists.
If you have ever been to any major city or any city for that matter, you will see that Christmas is all well and good. Cities and towns are covered in Christmas Trees and lights; Christmas is doing just fine.
This “war on Christmas” belief use to have some traction. About 40% of Americans believed this really was happening. In a recent poll conducted by Yougov, only about 23% believe this nonsense now.
Public schools can’t celebrate Christmas as a religious holiday, and I am okay with that. There are several holidays that fall into this winter break timeframe so celebrate whichever one you like. One more thing, protecting separation is not a “war on Christmas”. It’s an attempt to enforce church-state separation and ensure governments don’t play favorites when it comes to religion. Quite honestly, that should be expected in a country that promotes religious freedom.
These claims of a “war on Christmas” are as stale as an old fruitcake. Celebrate the holiday any way you like, Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, Happy Hanukkah, and Habari gani for Kwanzaa.
