I enjoy a good round of golf especially when it is 75 degrees in November. I find it relaxing smacking that little white ball around 18 holes but alas I do have some gripes about leisure golf and I thought this would be my first observation for my blog.
- Golf course are for playing rounds of golf. Driving ranges and putting greens are for practice. Get your wives, girlfriends, children some lessons before you send them on a golf course. They just slow the course down and more likely than not they will embarrass themselves.
- Tiger Woods makes millions of dollars looking over putts from 7 different angles, you don’t. Pro golfers have been plumb bobbing over putts for years and now I see amateurs doing it. I have yet to have anyone explain to me what they are accomplishing when they plumb bob. In a nutshell, PUTT THE DAMN BALL!
- As Clint Eastwood stated in one of his movies, “a man has to know his limitations”. When I was younger and a lot more flexible, I could play from the blue tees, now I know my limitations and embrace playing from the senior tees. There are folks I see all the time, “lets play from the blues”, now these folks couldn’t break 100 from the ladies tees but insist on playing the blue tees. Know your limitations.
- Some folks out there should really just give up golf and move on to corn hole in the back yard! I used to play with a guy in the Air Force who’s swing reminded me of 3 monkees trying to screw a football, it was ugly! I mean watching this guy made me physically tired and I was just watching him.
- Last, I can’t wait for this pandemic to be over, there is no more cart girl driving around on the course and even the 9th holes have been closed. By the time I walk off the course, I’m usually ready to chew someone’s arm off. Let’s get these golf course fully operational by next spring or I may have to find a new way to relax.

I like golf. Can’t play it well, but I like it. It’s the 10-15 shots out of the 110 that I usually take, that make me feel like I can do this. Then the next hole comes up and I realize, I really can’t. I have never had so much trouble picking up on a sport. I consider myself an athlete which makes it so frustrating. I’ve played hockey, softball, football, squash, racquetball and several other sports, but shit I have trouble with golf. I like playing so I can hang with the guys/ladies, work associates or help raise money for a good cause.
– I agree with keeping the game moving, especially when it comes to taking a swing or looking for a lost ball. Really, you’re not winning anything major. Maybe a golf club, a dozen balls, a free round of golf. It’s not the FedEx Cup and no one is out there taking your picture for ESPN. And if your concerned with the cost of the dozen balls you purchased, then buy cheaper balls.
– And all the etiquette. I mean if you are really good, you should be able to play with the crowd roaring and chanting your name or the 3 other golfs keeping their conversation going. I mean they do it in football, baseball, hockey and soccer. Both golf and tennis you have to be quiet so the athletes can concentrate, please!
Maybe I need to play golf with Tony. But I always play with folks who are better than me, and that still hasn’t changed my game. Maybe I should just accept the fact that I may not ever be that good at golf. I’ll stick with my Tuesday morning skate. A cold sheet of ice, goalie skates, goalie pads, and a brisk hour and a half skate with guys 20 yrs younger than me. Gods knows how much longer I can do it.
